Spanish

Living in Ecuador for my junior year of college was perhaps the best academic choice I have ever made. I have become fluent in Spanish, familiarized myself with Latin American literature and chosen literary translation as the focus of my studies.

Note: Students must be enrolled in an appropriate language course the semester or summer before study abroad.  Language programs are open to students in all disciplines.  Prerequisites for language are the minimum required for the program, more language study is highly recommended.

Chile – ISEP:  Pontifica Universidad Catolica de Valparaiso(D, Ex)

Fall, spring   Language: Spanish.  Prereqs: 2.75 GPA, 4 semesters of college-level Spanish for courses for foreigners; 5 semesters to take courses with Chilean students.  Housing: Host family in Viña del Mar. Details: Core courses in Spanish literature, conversation, and composition for foreigners at multiple levels, as well as area studies courses.  General curriculum is available to students with adequate Spanish proficiency, determined by a placement examination.  Community engagement opportunities available.  Non-tuition educational expenses:  Lower (D), same (Ex)

Costa Rica - ACM: Community Engagement in Public Health, Education & the Environment (P)

Fall (Note: Students electing university enrollment must arrive mid-July) Language: Spanish. Prereqs:  3.0 GPA for university option.  2-years college-level Spanish. Enrollment in a Spanish course in the prior semester.  Housing: Host family. Details:  Core course on Costa Rica, intensive Spanish, month-long credit-bearing community placement in San Jose or a rural area, elective course on climate change, education, or the Costa Rica health system.  Students choosing the university enrollment option are unable to have a community placement, but can do other kinds of community engagement activities.  Non-tuition educational expenses:  Lower

Costa Rica - ACM: Field Research in the Environment, Social Sciences & Humanities (P)

Spring  Language: Spanish.  Prereqs: 2-years college-level Spanish.  Enrollment in a Spanish course in the prior semester.  Background in field methods recommended. Housing: Host family in San Jose. Costa Rica - ISEP - Universidad Nacional, Heredia (D)

Fall, spring  Language: Spanish. Prereqs: 2.75 GPA/ 2 years of Spanish or equivalent. Enrollment in a Spanish course in the prior semester. Housing: Host families. Ecuador - Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ)(Ex)

Fall, spring Language: Spanish and English.  Prereqs: 3.0 GPA, 3.0 in Spanish, 4 semesters of college-level  Spanish; enrollment in a Spanish course in the prior semester. Prior study of Latin America strongly recommended.  Housing: Host family.  Details: Quito in Transition course taught remotely by a Beloit College faculty member encourages critical engagement with Quito.  Full range of humanities, social science, and science courses, some with field study trips.  Students are encouraged to enroll in courses taught in Spanish.  Non-tuition educational expenses:  Same

Spain - CIEE: Seville (P)

Fall, spring Language:  Spanish. Fall, spring  Language: Spanish. Prereqs: 2.75 GPA, 5 semesters  college-level Spanish.  Spanish course in the prior semester. Housing: Apartments or dormitories. Details:   Smaller university 30 minutes from Madrid. The Faculty of Applied Languages offers courses in Spanish as a Second Language, Modern Languages, Modern Languages and Management, Translation & Interpreting. Spain - ISEP: Universidad de Almería (Ex)

Spring or academic year  Language: Spanish. Some courses available in English.  Prereqs:  2.75 GPA, 4 semesters of college-level Spanish. Spanish course in the prior semester. Housing: Apartments. Details: Students with only 4 semesters of Spanish may enroll in regular university courses taught in English, plus Spanish as a Second Language through the Centro de Lenguas. Enrollment in a university course taught in Spanish is dependent on the student's language abilities.  Non-tuition educational expenses:  Same

Spain - ISEP: Universidad de Murcia (D, Ex)

Fall, spring (Spanish Language and Hispanic Culture program), spring or academic year (university enrollment).  Prereqs. 2.75 GPA.  4 semesters of college-level Spanish. Spanish course in the prior semester. Housing:  Apartments. Details: Students with only 4 semesters of Spanish enroll in the Spanish Language and Hispanic Culture program for foreigners.  A semester in this program can be combined with a semester of university enrollment. Students with more advanced Spanish can enroll in the university without taking the program for foreign students.  Non-tuition educational expenses: Same

Spain - ISEP: Universidad de Navarra, Pamplona (D, Ex) 

Spring or academic year. August and January bridge program available. Language: Spanish.  Prereqs: 2.75 GPA, 5- 6 semesters of college-level Spanish. Students with only 4 semesters of Spanish may enroll in the bridge program to meet the language requirement. Housing: Apartments or dormitory.  Description:  Spanish for foreigners plus selection from the university's wide range of courses. Non-tuition educational expenses:  Same
