Study Abroad Programs with Latin American and Caribbean Studies


Argentina - SIT: Regional Integration, Development, and Social Change

  • Semesters: Fall, Spring.
  • Language: Spanish.
  • Eligibility requirements: 2 years college level Spanish; Coursework in economics, sociology, political science, or development studies.
  • Housing: host family in Buenos Aires, small hotels and hostels during excursions.
  • Details: Focus on the southern cone region of Latin America with coursework on history and politics, economic development, social movements and contemporary issues.  Educational excursions to Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay are integrated into this focus. Independent study project helps students apply coursework. Intensive Spanish language course offered as well. 

Belize – Galen University, San Ignacio

  • Semesters: Fall or Spring.
  • Language: English.
  • Eligibility requirements: None.
  • Housing: students stay in family-run resorts with wireless access. Breakfast is included during the week, but students prepare their own lunches and dinners.
  • Details: Courses in cultural anthropology and archaeology with supervised field research opportunities. Focus on Mesoamerican civilizations, including Mayan ruin sites and indigenous communities. Course on development examines Western constructs of progress and presents an indigenous perspective. 

Brazil – ACM: Environmental Studies, Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora or Universidade de Brazília

  • Semesters: Fall and Spring.
  • Language: Portuguese.
  • Eligibility requirements: Advanced level of Spanish.
  • Housing: Host family or shared apartment.
  • Details: Students take intensive Portuguese plus two elective courses. UFJF program focuses on human impact on the mountainous ecosystems north of Rio de Janeiro. UdB program focuses on the vast biodiversity of the Carrado savannah and the impact of agriculture in the region.

Chile – ISEP:  Pontifica Universidad Catolica de Valparaiso

  • Semesters: Fall, Spring.
  • Language: Spanish.
  • Eligibility requirements: 5 semesters Spanish for integrated classes; 2.75 gpa.
  • Housing: Host family in Viña del Mar.
  • Details: Core courses in Spanish literature, conversation, and composition for foreigners at multiple levels, as well as area studies courses. General curriculum is available to students with adequate Spanish proficiency, determined by a placement examination. Community engagement opportunities available.

Costa Rica – ACM: Field Research in the Environment, social Sciences & Humanities

  • Semesters: Spring.
  • Language: Spanish.
  • Eligibility requirements: Jr. or Sr with coursework in the proposed research discipline. The equivalent of 2 years of college Spanish preferred, enrollment in a Spanish course the semester or summer before departure; background in field methods recommended.
  • Housing: Host family, other housing possible during field-work.
  • Details: Study with Americans in Spanish; limited curriculum, student plan a month-long research project in discipline of choice during the semester, present a project paper; open to all majors.

Dominican Republic – CIEE: Liberal Arts in Santiago

  • Semesters: Fall, Spring.
  • Language: Spanish.
  • Eligibility requirements: 4 semesters Spanish; 2.75 gpa overall, with 3.0 gpa in Spanish courses.
  • Housing: Host families.
  • Details: Area studies courses cover culture and society, gender issues, and literature of the Hispanic Caribbean, folklore and film of the Dominican Republic, and Afro-Caribbean cultures.   Spanish language course is required and students agree to only speak Spanish, except in emergencies, during the program.

Ecuador - Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ)

  • Semesters: Exchange, Fall, Spring or academic year.
  • Language: Courses in Spanish or partly in English.
  • Eligibility requirements: 2 years of college Spanish; enrollment in a Spanish course the semester or summer before; 3.0 cumulative gpa and 3.0 in Spanish; previous course work for studio art courses; courses with a Latin American focus strongly recommended.
  • Housing: Host family.
  • Details: Orientation in Quito; full range of science and social science courses, some with field study trips; study with local students; excursions; volunteer opportunities.

French Caribbean – ISEP: Université des Antilles et de la Guyane, Martinique

  • Semesters: Spring only.
  • Language: French.
  • Eligibility requirements: 4 – 5 semesters of college French, 2.75 gpa.
  • Housing: Host families or dorms.
  • Details: Courses in French as a foreign language and in Creole language. Integrated courses in arts, geography, history and linguistics, medical studies, and economics.

Puerto Rico – ISEP: University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras

  • Semesters: Fall, Spring.
  • Language: Instruction in Spanish; text books in English and Spanish.
  • Eligibility requirements: 2 years college-level Spanish.
  • Housing: Double-occupancy dorms 1 block from campus.
  • Details: Caribbean studies courses include contemporary societies and cultures of the Caribbean, popular movements in the Caribbean, nationalism in Latin America and the Caribbean, and economic development in interdisciplinary perspective, among others.

  • D: Direct enrollment in a university as a visiting student.
  • Ex: Enrollment in a university as an exchange student.
  • P: Provider program. Program organized for students attending U.S. colleges and universities.

Non-tuition educational expenses: 

Cost of room and board compared to Beloit College. Other expenses to consider: airfare, local transportation, visas, health insurance, immunizations, books, student activity fees, recreational travel and other activities. 

  • Higher: Up to $2,000 more than Beloit College room and board for one semester.
  • Significantly Higher: $2,001 or more above Beloit College room and board.
