Study Abroad Programs with Chemistry

My research internship gave me experience with new computer programs while also allowing me to introduce other researchers to programs and methods that I have learned at Beloit.

Universidad San Fransico de Quito, Ecuador, Spring 2016

Programs

Australia - James Cook University, Townsville (D)

  • Semesters: Fall, Spring (southern hemisphere calendar).
  • Language: English.
  • Prerequisites: 2.8 GPA.
  • Housing: Dormitories or private apartments.
  • Details: Study chemistry in the Science Place's state of the art laboratories and learning spaces. Student/teacher ratio of 10:1 in 2nd and 3d year chemistry courses. University research facilities include island, rain forest and outback field stations.  
  • Non-tuition educational expenses: Significantly higher.

Australia –  Macquarie University, Sydney (D)      

  • Semesters: Fall, Spring (southern hemisphere calendar).  
  • Language: English.
  • Prereqs: 2.5 GPA, 3.0 for internship.
  • Housing: Dormitories or private apartments.
  • Details: Study with local students; courses in organic chemistry, chemical analysis, biochemistry and many others within the division of Environmental and Life Sciences; orientation and a guide to Sydney on line; internships possible, volunteer opportunities available.
  • Non-tuition educational expenses: Significantly higher.

Austria - ISEP: Johannes Kepler University Linz (D)               

  • Semesters: Spring.
  • Language: English and German.
  • Prerequisites: 2.75 GPA.
  • Housing: Dormitory.
  • Details: Economics-technical chemistry. 2-3 week intensive German before semester start. Semester-long German courses available. Intermediate-level German required for enrollment in courses taught in German. 300 university courses are offered in English. Fall semester: October to late January. Spring semester: March-early July.
  • Non-tuition educational expenses: Same.

Costa Rica - ACM: Community Engagement in Public Health, Education, and the Environment  (P) 

  • Semesters: Fall.
  • Language: Spanish.
  • Prereqs: Junior or senior status at the time of enrollment. 2 years of college-level Spanish or the equivalent. Enrollment in a Spanish course the fall semester before departure. Background in field methods recommended.
  • Housing: Host family.
  • Details: Core course on community engagement. Spanish language. Elective courses on Climate Change and Costa Rica's Health System. Month-long community placement. Visit to Nicaragua to broaden understanding of Central America.  
  • Non-tuition educational expenses: Lower.

Costa Rica – ACM: Field Research in the Environment, Social Sciences & Humanities  (P)          

  • Semesters: Spring.
  • Language: Spanish.
  • Prereqs: Junior or senior status at the time of enrollment. 2 years of college-level Spanish or the equivalent. Enrollment in a Spanish course the fall semester before departure. Background in field methods recommended.
  • Housing: Host family in San Jose. Host family or other arrangements during field-work. 
  • Details: Courses related to the program theme. Month-long field research project.
  • Non-tuition educational expenses: Lower.

Ecuador - Universidad San Francisco de Quito (Ex)

  • Semesters: Fall, Spring.
  • Language: Spanish; some courses taught in English.
  • Prereqs: 3.0 GPA and 3.0 in Spanish; 2 years of college-level Spanish; enrollment in a Spanish course the semester or summer before; prior coursework with a Latin American focus strongly recommended.
  • Housing: Host family.
  • Details: Quito in Transition course taught remotely by a Beloit College faculty member. Some courses have field study trips. Excursions. Volunteer opportunities.
  • Non-tuition educational expenses: Same.

Ireland - University of Limerick, Limerick (D)            

  • Semesters: Fall, Spring.
  • Language: English.
  • Prereqs: 2.9 GPA.
  • Housing: Dormitories.
  • Details: Industrial biochemistry. Food science & health. Pharmaceutical and industrial chemistry. Environmental sciences. Health sciences (midwifery, nursing, physiotherapy, sports & exercise sciences. Ireland's sports university.  
  • Non-tuition expenses: Same.

New Zealand - University of Otago, Dunedin (D)               

  • Semesters: Fall, Spring.
  • Language: English.
  • Prereqs: 3.0 GPA, junior or senior standing.
  • Housing: Dormitories or student apartments.
  • Details: Maori studies, environmental science, health, marine science.  Chemistry courses not available at Beloit.   
  • Non-tuition educational expenses: Higher.

Norway – From Mountain to Fjord, Sogn og Fjordane University College, Sogndal (D)

  • Semesters: Fall.
  • Language: English. 
  • Prereqs: Junior or senior standing at time of enrollment. Prior study of earth, environmental or life sciences.
  • Housing: Dormitory.
  • Details: Study geology and ecology of western Norway with international students; three module courses: Geological processes (bedrock geology), Ecological and surface processes (glacial geology, vegetation ecology, limnology) and Fjord processes (fjord hydrography, fjord biology, fjord sedimentology). Field-work in environments from alpine to marine. Beloit advisor: Laura Parmentier.
  • Non-tuition educational expenses: Same.

United Kingdom- Lancaster University, Lancaster, England (D)

  • Semesters: Fall (late September - mid-December), Spring (early January - mid- to late June).
  • Language: English.
  • Prereqs: 2.8 GPA.
  • Housing: Dormitory.
  • Details: State of the art facilities. Small group instruction. Chemistry teaching uses the categories of Synthesis, Measurement and Analysis, rather than segregated subjects of Inorganic, Organic and Physical chemistry (IOP).
  • Non-tuition educational expenses: Higher

United Kingdom– University of Glasgow, Glasgow, Scotland (D)

  • Semesters: Fall, Spring.
  • Language: English.
  • Prereqs: 3.0 GPA.
  • Housing: Dormitory.
  • Details: Chemistry undergraduate studies available in chemistry, chemical physics, and chemistry with medicinal chemistry. Fall semester: September - mid-December; Spring: January - late May.
  • Non-tuition educational expenses: Same.

United States - ACM: Oak Ridge Science Semester, Oak Ridge, TN  (P)                    

  • Semesters: Fall. 
  • Prereqs: 3.0 GPA. Senior standing at time of enrollment preferred. Major in biology, chemistry, computer science, physics or social sciences.
  • Housing: Apartment.
  • Details: Program focus on national and global energy and environmental. Intensive research in Oak Ridge laboratories. Interdisciplinary seminar, advanced course options; guest speakers, departmental colloquia.
  • Non-tuition educational expenses: Same. Note: In most years, students receive a stipend and housing allowance.

United States - Semester in Environmental Science, Marine Biological Laboratory, Woods Hole MA* (P)      

  • Semesters: Fall.
  • Prereqs: 3.0 GPA. Senior standing at time of enrollment preferred. Major in biology, chemistry, computer science, physics or social sciences.
  • Housing: Apartment.
  • Details: Program focus on national and global energy and environmental. Intensive research in Oak Ridge laboratories. Interdisciplinary seminar, advanced course options; guest speakers, departmental colloquia.
  • Non-tuition educational expenses: Same.

United States - Sea Education Association (SEA) Semester, Woods Hole MA (P)

  • Semesters: Fall, Spring
  • Prereqs: Science courses and field experience are assets. 
  • Housing: Dormitories while on land; sailing ship while at sea.  
  • Details: Study, sail, research, and tend a tall mast ship.  Marine biodiversity, maritime sciences, climate, oceanography.

Also of possible interest are the German Academic Exchange's RISE summer internships in which undergraduates studying natural sciences, engineering, or life sciences assist doctoral students with their research; and the CBYX  Young Professionals Program, an 11-month experience of intensive German language study, university study, and a 6-month paid internship.
