The office of Residential Life employs people for a wide assortment of jobs. With 34 Resident Assistants, several office assistants, and a handful of summer conference workers, it is one of the largest departments on campus in regards to student employment. Additionally, there is one full-time administrative assistant and four full-time professional staff members.
The structure of the department of Residential Life and the Student Affairs division is designed to provide a support and resource system for every member of the community.
Student Positions
Resident Assistants live on most floors and reside in many houses. Primarily, the RAs are a major resource for students living in the halls. They actively engage in developing community, serve as support persons, and are the connection between the student body and the administrative staff.
RAs receive extensive training and work with students in the following areas:
- Peer counseling
- Building inclusive communities
- Educational and social programming
- Conflict mediation (roommate conflicts, relationship problems)
- Crisis intervention
- Creating and modeling an inclusive living and learning environment
- Campus resources and referrals
- Policy enforcement/Community norm setting
The office assistants do a wide variety of tasks and works primarily with the Operations Coordinator. They may file paperwork, do data entry, oversee student storage, or complete creative marketing materials for the office. The work is quite varied and changes from day to day.
During the summer, Beloit College hosts a number of events on campus and also takes time to prepare for the upcoming school year. The summer conference staff helps with set-up, tear-down, and overall operations for campus events. This job sometimes requires heavy lifting and other physical demands.
Professional Employees
There are three RLCs at Beloit College. Each RLC oversees a complex of residential buildings and supervises approximately 10-14 RAs. The RLCs’ primary role is to support the RAs. Additionally, the RLCs offer basic counseling, mentoring, mediation, and disciplinary meetings for the general student body.
They each also have several collateral assignments; for example, Title IX Investigator, SEAL Coordinator, Greek Life Coordinator, Sustained Dialogue, Website Management, Res Life Shuttle Bus Coordinator.
