  1. Where are you studying abroad? Why did you choose this country/program?

I am currently in South Africa studying community health and social policy. It has been a wonderful experience so far full of various homestays, lots of good food, and more information that I could ever retain in a lifetime. I chose this program because I knew that I would get an opportunity to experience South Africa through a unique lens, with experiences that I would not have had access to through direct enrolling in a university or coming to visit on vacation.

  1. What is the most unexpected thing you have encountered so far during your off-campus study experience?

The most unexpected thing I've encountered so far has probably been the driving. The mini bus taxi drivers drive like maniacs! I don't know how they manage to not get in accidents. The first few mini bus taxi rides were definitely an experience.

  1. What are the three most important things you packed in your suitcase? Why?

Three important things that I forgot to pack in my suitcase were a large comfy sweatshirt, a comfy pair of sweatpants, and my Birkenstocks. All very important since it was freezing when I first got here, and I had no sandals that I could wear socks with!
