“A Portrait of Martin Luther King, Jr.” will be the theme of the 2014 Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Convocation at Beloit College. Dr. Brenda Hooper Atlas’77 will serve as the speaker at the event taking place on Monday, Jan. 20 at 4 p.m. in Eaton Chapel.
Atlas is the head pastor for Bethel A.M.E. Church in Beloit and the former principal of Merrill Elementary School. The topic of her speech will be "Behold, the Portrait of a Dreamer." In addition to Atlas’ address, a Beloit College student will be selected to speak.
Atlas’ lecture will be the 10th in a series of annual programs at the college celebrating the life and legacy of the civil rights leader. Past speakers have included James Perkins, former mayor of Selma, Ala.; Joanne Bland, co-founder of the National Voting Rights Museum and Institute; and Robert L. Belle, Jr., former director of the Federal TRIO Programs within the U.S. Department of Education.
