As part of the sixth annual Miller Upton Forum, 2013 Upton Scholar James D. Gwartney will give the June and Edgar Martin Memorial lecture on "Institutions, Economic Freedom, and the Wealth of Nations." Free and open to the public, the lecture takes place on Friday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. in the atrium of the Center for the Sciences.

Gwartney is the Gus A. Stavros Eminent Scholar at Florida State University, where he directs the Stavros Center for the Advancement of Free Enterprise and Economic Education. He is also the co-author of the annual report, Economic Freedom of the World, which provides information on the consistency of institutions and policies with economic freedom for 144 countries.

Named for economist and sixth Beloit College President Miller Upton, the Upton Forum on the Wealth and Well-Being of Nations is Beloit’s premier residency program in economics. It focuses student research and events around the work of a different scholar in the discipline each year.
