A new name for the Beloit College Heritage Society, which recognizes alumni and friends who have included Beloit College in their estate plans, was announced at the Heritage Society Luncheon on June 14 during Reunion weekend.

Renamed for an accomplished alumnus, the James E. Duffy’49 Society celebrates the vision James Duffy (below, right, next to President Scott Bierman) brings to his philanthropy at Beloit and exemplifies how all Beloit College donors can shape their charitable legacies.

Duffy, whom the Beloit College Duffy Partnerships is named after, had a 46-year career in television and radio, including 15 years as president of ABC Television. He is the founder of Project Literacy U.S., a media alliance with the Public Broadcasting Service, and he has served on presidential commissions and received national awards for volunteerism and support of literacy and education.

The James E. Duffy’49 Society plays a vital role in the future of Beloit College. Last fall, Fast Forward: The Campaigns for Beloiters was launched as a series of focused fundraising initiatives aimed at supporting the mission of Beloit and enhancing the reputation of Beloit College. Through imaginative gifts like Duffy’s and estate gift plans that will build endowment for long-term support of the college, energizing resources are provided for the life-changing work of students and faculty.

Also honored at the luncheon was board of trustees member Jorge Galante, M.D., for his own philanthropy at Beloit and his leadership in the college’s newest fundraising effort campaign, Fast Forward:The Campaigns for Beloiters.

Galante (below, right, next to Duffy), an orthopedic surgeon, has earned worldwide recognition in the field of total hip and knee replacement for the development of a titanium fiber mesh used in joint replacement surgery. A native of Argentina, Galante owns a farm in Clinton, Wis., not far from the Beloit College campus.
