The merits of Beloit's Porter Scholar Program were discussed in a recent Beloit Daily News article.
In "Porter scholars reflect on experiences" published on Nov. 24, Beloit Memorial High School senior Mike Cummins told reporter Geoff Bruce, “It gives you the experience of college when you’re in high school. It helps you prepare and it’s a way to get ahead. Unlike an AP test, it’s an actual college course.”
Other students quoted in the article were Beloit Turner’s Gabriela Gagula and Hononegah High School’s Clairanne Porter.
Assistant Director of Admissions Kate Virgo and Olga Ogurtsova, the faculty advisor to Porter Scholars, were also interviewed, citing the small class sizes, faculty accessibility, and scholarship potential as strengths of the program.
"The purpose is for students to have an opportunity for an academic challenge that they might not have at their high schools,” Virgo said.
