Conducting research on the physiological effects of high heels versus flats is one of the ways Kathryn Johnson has engaged her own students, but this summer she worked on ways to make science more of an involved learning process for future college students as well.

Nearly 1,250 students will hit the Beloit College campus for the first day of classes on Tuesday, Aug. 30. They won’t just be cramming for tests and going to classes for the next eight months though. They will also be reading to kids, building houses, boosting the business of local vendors, attending guest lectures by Nobel prize winners and much more.

President Scott Bierman has announced that Charles Westerberg will be the first Director of the Liberal Arts in Practice Center at Beloit College. The current associate dean and associate professor of sociology was recommended for the role by Provost Ann Davies.

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has officially awarded platinum-level Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) status to Beloit College’s Center for the Sciences.
