Beloit College will welcome on Monday (Aug. 19) 341 first-year students from 35 states and 13 countries. Out of the 341 students, 25 are new degree-seeking transfer students and 15 are new exchange students. All the first-years, along with sophomores, juniors and seniors, will begin classes on Monday, Aug. 26.

The Wright Museum of Art at Beloit College will open an exhibit based off of the book Behind the Beautiful Forevers by Katherine Boo on Thursday, Sept. 5. The photographs in the exhibit are the work of Associated Press photographer Amiran White,documenting her time in Mumbai, India and her multiple visits to the Mumbai Municipal Trash Dump.

Described as “a daring, historic, stream-crossed, hay bale-studded course of endurance,” the 51st annual Olde English Classic 5K is set for Saturday, Sept. 21. Per tradition, the race will be held at Leeson Park, located at Milwaukee Road and Leeson Drive in Beloit.

WASHINGTON— Two Beloit College students participated in the 2013 Media Plan Case Competition finals earlier this month in Washington, D.C. The Beloit students were among 12 finalists chosen to compete by the Washington Media Scholars Foundation out of an initial field of 236 undergraduates from across the country.

After reviewing the Fisher vs. University of Texas affirmative action case involving a rejected white applicant who sued, the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday ruled 7-1 to send it back to a lower court for a more detailed assessment of the university’s admissions policy.

Local authors Ron Nief and Tom McBride will explore these and the startling differences in the mindsets of today’s young people vs. older generations in their new book. The pair has signed a contract with Sourcebooks, one of the leading and largest independent publishers in North America, to produce the book, as yet untitled, for publication next summer.
