John Pickart studied cello with Walter Heermann, Principal Cellist of the Cincinnati Symphony; Lowell Creitz of the Pro Arte String Quartet; Theo Salzman, Principal Cellist of the Pittsburgh Symphony; and Dudley Powers and Frank Miller, both Principal Cellists of the Chicago Symphony.
Pickart has performed solos with orchestras in Chicago Symphony Hall and Milwaukee Performing Arts Center, and with the University of Wisconsin Symphony, the Beloit Janesville Symphony Orchestra and UW River Falls Symphony among others. He has presented numerous solo recitals, including several at the National String Workshop. Pickart has been a member and principal cellist of many orchestras and was for many years principal cellist of the Beloit Janesville Symphony.
In addition to teaching cello at Beloit College, Pickart was a cello instructor for many years at the National String Workshop, as well as for the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, the Wisconsin Youth Orchestra, Greater Twin Cities Youth Orchestra, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Summer Camp, and the Minnesota ASTA Summer Camp.
His students have won many awards and scholarships and have pursued successful careers as performers, teachers, music historians and music therapists.
