Yiheng Yvonne Wu (2016), Assistant Professor
B.A., Yale University
M.A., Ph.D., University of California, San Diego
In her music, composer Yvonne Wu explores both poetic and physical qualities of instrumental sounds. She develops sonic characters much like fictional personalities, which are then continually re-contextualized through juxtapositions and fragmentation. Her music has been performed by groups including Ensemble SurPlus (Germany), Arraymusic (Toronto), the La Jolla Symphony conducted by Steven Schick, and (upcoming) the Mivos Quartet (NYC), which awarded her the Mivos/Kanter Prize. In her musical research, Yvonne investigates perspectival shifts in instrumental music, specifically implications of critical or ironic stances in the music of György Ligeti. She also examines the intersections of musical affect and composer-performer-listener relationships.
At Beloit, Yvonne teaches music composition, music theory/sound studies, and leads the InterArts Ensemble. Additional teaching interests include song-writing, experiments in musical notation, a critical look at site-specific and body-specific music and performance art, practical musical analysis for performers, and 20th-century music. She is also interested in organizing LAPC projects in which students lead musical workshops and performances for local youth.
