House 7

House 7 was a large, deep rectangular structure with square corners. It measured 36 feet by 31 feet, and the depth ranged from 48" to 54" below ground level. Three sets of four posts running long the longer axis of the room comprised the primary supports. Six secondary supports were found along the south wall. The entrance faced east, and was 30 feet long and 7 feet wide and was both inclined and had two steps. A large, ovoid, adobe-lined  firepit, was located directly in front of the entrance. It was outlined with a ring of stones set flush with the floor. The entire structure was lined with masonry which consisted of dressed limestone held together by mud and small chinking stones. The masonry extended about two feet above ground level. The floor was plastered with adobe, but none was found on the walls.

This house type is consistent with the San Francisco Phase of Mogollon culture, dating from AD 650 to 750.

Pottery

There seem to be two relatively distinct phases represented in the pottery of House 7. Textured plainwares and early painted types seem to have been the prevalent types when the house was occupied. In addition, numerous sherds of "intrusive types" were found in the fill, indicating that the house was used as a refuse dump during a much later phase of occupation. These can be seen on a separate section of Intrusives.

Intrusives

Many of the sherds found in the fill of House 7 are characteristic of a much later phase of occupation. Sophisticated black-on-white types and polychromes suggest that the house was used as a refuse dump during the surface pueblo phase at the site.
