House 3a

House 3A was the only circular pithouse on the site. The pithouse was 36" to 42" deep, and was later built over by House 3. Four primary supports were located near the edges along with two secondary posts, one of which was located in a small niche along the north side. The entrance faced east, and was long and narrow - 7' by 1'-8". A step 1'-7" above the floor separated the room from the entry. A circular, adobe-lined  firepit, 5-1/2" deep, was located in the center of the room. The walls were plastered right over the native soil.

This house type is consistent with the Georgetown Phase of Mogollon culture, dating from about AD 550 to 650, but a beam found in the house was dated by tree-ring dating to sometime after AD 800.

Pottery

Sherds of several pottery types were found on the floor and in the fill of House 3A. The earliest, of course, were from the floor of the house, and include Mogollon Red-on-Brown and Three Circle types. Those found in the fill include Three Circle and more sophisticated black-on-white types.
