Dogoszhi Black-on-White - CA. 1040-1220

Dogoszhi Black-on-White is similar to Gallup, but has organic paint which soaks slightly into the surface. Broad bands, usually rectilinear with oblique hatching, are diagnostic although some curvilinear "claw" motifs are found. Bowls are rare, and our vessels would both be considered canteens.

Paste: Light gray to white
Temper: Fine sand with occasional dark, angular fragments
Surface: Polished and slipped
Forms: Usually jars, rarely bowls and ladles
Design: Oblique hatched designs, motifs generally rectilinear
