Madison Barrett

Email: barrettml@beloit.edu Office: Hendricks Center for the Arts, studio 226Mezzo-soprano Madison Barrett has been described as “charming” (operetta-researchcenter.org) and “lovely-voiced” (Cleveland Classical). She is an active performer in both the operatic and musical theatre fields and has performed with companies including Ohio Light Opera, Four Season’s theatre, the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, and Middleton Player’s Theatre. Recent role credits include Margaret (The Light in the Piazza), Lady Jacqueline (Me and My Girl), Ilene Cavanaugh (The Arcadians), Endimione (La Calisto), Smitty (How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying), Flora (No no Nanette), Flora (La Traviata), Nancy (Albert Herring), The Beggar Woman (Sweeney Todd), and Hansel (Hansel and Gretel) among others.
Ms. Barrett is currently pursuing her Doctorate of Musical Arts degree with a minor in German and linguistics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she holds the prestigious Collins Fellowship. She was awarded the Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship in 2021 and was named a finalist in the Patricia Crump Vocal Competition. She received a second place award in the Grady-Rayam Sacred Music Competition as well as first place awards from the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) for the Florida division and a second place award for the Wisconsin division. Ms. Barrett holds degrees in Voice Performance from The University of Wisconsin-Madison (M.M.) and from the University of Florida (B.A.) with a minor in Business Administration.
Ms. Barrett is passionate about working with contemporary composers and recently premiered the mezzo-soprano version of Juliana Hall’s song cycle “Winter Windows”. She performed as Clara in excerpts from Bill Banfield’s new opera Endimione with the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra and premiered the role of Devorah in Dr. Paul Richard’s opera The Golem of Prague with the University of Florida Opera Theatre.
In addition to teaching at Beloit College, she holds an active voice studio in Madison, Wi. Her number one priority as a teacher is to encourage creative, comfortable, and collaborative teaching environments where students feel free to fully explore their voice. Ms. Barrett’s teaching style is pedagogically based and rooted in current voice science research. As a crossover artist, she is passionate about teaching a myriad of musical genres and styles to uplift each student’s artistic and musical goals.
