Description Override

Introduction to Historical Thinking: Nineteenth and Twentieth-Century Colonialism (1). This course explores major themes in the history of nineteenth and twentieth-century colonialism. It focuses on the British and French Empires but also includes some aspects of German and Belgian colonial history. The class analyzes the mindset, ideologies and strategies of the European colonizers, while equally taking into account the experiences and counter-strategies of the colonized populations. Students will learn about the economic, political and cultural effects that colonialism had on the non-Western part of the world. At the same time, we will also examine the influence that colonialism had on European culture and society. In addition to providing an overview of the period, the class will prepare students to undertake their own original research in colonial history, resulting in a research paper at the end of the semester. We will explore different methodological and theoretical approaches to colonial history, discuss strategies of developing and conceptualizing research questions, and practice analyzing a wide range of historical sources from different parts of the world, including political writings, novels, poems, and movies.
