Topics in Critical Identity Studies: Maladies of Empire: Race and Medicine (.5 units). This course will examine case studies at the intersection of conventional medicine with colonialism, diaspora, and coerced labor. How do our medical knowledge systems depend on legacies of harm? How might we address those legacies in the present? How might an understanding of that history illuminate why contemporary communities resist care practices? Together we will examine how health care workers in training might develop more humane and inclusive approaches to medical care. May be repeated for credit if topic is different.
