Celebrating Black History Month

Hello Beloiters! It’s Black History Month, which means that Black Students United (BSU) is teaming up with Student Success, Equity, and Community (SSEC) to create informational and celebratory events honoring Black history and culture throughout the month.

The first two weeks of events include:

Special basketball home game against Ripon Feb. 5

This Wednesday, Feb. 5, the Buccaneer basketball teams will go head-to-head with longtime rival Ripon College in Beloit’s last home game of the season. Women’s basketball starts at 5:30 and men’s at 7:30 p.m.

There will be free T-shirts, a live DJ, free food, student performances and competitions, and giveaways from Duluth Trading Company. A special broadcast by Executive in Residence Matt Laszlo ’92 will feature former basketball player Tim Leslie ’89 and special guests. You won’t want to miss this game!

Sports recap

  • Men’s and women’s track and field competed at the Spartan Shootout in Dubuque, IA, over the weekend. The men’s team placed second of 9 teams and the women’s placed sixth. Josh Yearby ’27 won both the 60m and the 200m, along with a few relay wins.
  • Swim and dive competed in the Private College Championships in Kenosha, WI, over the weekend. The men’s team placed seventh and the women’s placed third. The women’s dive team took home second, third, and fourth in the 1 M and Helena Harrison ’25 won the 3 M. Jeremey Mueller ’27 won the 200 freestyle and Lydia Nordgren ’28 won the 100 butterfly.
  • The women’s basketball team faced off against the Lawrence University Vikings this last week. They dropped the game 64-37. They will face off in their rivalry game against Ripon College on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
  • The men’s basketball team also faced off against the Vikings on Tuesday and dropped their game 69-57. Jabari Scuefield ’25 recorded a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Along with the women’s team, they will also play against the Red Hawks on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

Sydney Moses ’25, a senior double majoring in anthropology and creative writing, is gaining valuable experience interning at the Beloit Historical Society.

Phi Beta Kappa is holding a series of reading groups to prepare for Visiting Scholar Dr. Kelly Lambert. Email orbezoperezgd@beloit.edu to receive copies of the readings.

Underkofler and Kang Prize Nominations

Students have the opportunity to nominate a faculty member for the 2025 Underkofler Award as well as a faculty or staff member for the 2025 Kang Prize. In doing so, you honor those people who have been among the most important in your time at the college. Nominations are being accepted, extended through February 14.
