Hello Beloiters. Make some time in your schedules this week to take part in wide-ranging discussions as the college celebrates ground-breaking writing and leaders in social justice and racial equity.

Science fiction

On Tuesday, “Le Guin at Beloit” celebrates the 50th anniversary of the publication of Ursula Le Guin’s award-winning novel, “The Dispossessed,” and her time at Beloit as the 1992 Mackey Chair in Creative Writing.

LGBTQ+ health care equity

At 7 p.m. Wednesday in Weissberg Auditorium, we welcome Ousley Scholar-in-Residence Britney Daniels, a seasoned emergency room nurse and unyielding advocate for racial equity.

Hip-hop and funk

And on Thursday, we welcome Laylah Amatullah Barrayn, who curated the “Day One DNA: 50 years in Hip-Hop Culture” on display through Nov. 16 at the Wright Museum.

Also in conjunction with that exhibit, our traditional Folk & Blues Music Festival becomes “Funk & Blues” on Friday, highlighting regional DJs and break dancers. The event is from 5-10 p.m. at Riverside Park.

Sports recap

  • Buccaneers football picked up their first win of the season Saturday, defeating Grinnell College 16-7 on the Pioneers’ home turf. 
  • Women’s soccer started their week with a 2-2 draw against a very talented University of Dubuque team. They then faced off against Kalamazoo College Sunday, losing 4-0 in a rainy matchup.
  • Men’s soccer played two games this weekend. They first dropped a game to Principia College, 3-0, then lost to Westminster College (MO) Sunday, 2-0.
  • Men’s and women’s cross country competed at the Gil Dodds Invitational in Warrenville, Illinois, over the weekend. The women’s team placed 16th and the men’s team placed 17th.
  • Women’s volleyball had a busy week with four games. They competed against the Milwaukee School of Engineering twice, Dominican University (Ill.), and Ripon college. All the games ended in 3-0 losses. They will host a double-header at home on Tuesday against Coe College and Rockford University.

Sofia Hernandez Crade'13 created a larger-than-life puppet of the legendary local artist Charles Rockey.

Sofia Hernandez Crade’13 moved a small Colorado community to tears at the sight of the 24-foot-tall puppet she created in the likeness of the town’s beloved local artist, Charles Rockey. The process of making the puppet inspired her to continue pursuing her dreams after a personal loss.

American College Dance Association Conference
