Medieval Literature and Culture

This course examines various cultural productions of the Spanish Middle Ages. It includes the study of literary, political, artistic, linguistic, scientific, environmental, and/or religious interchanges that existed among the three dominant cultural communities in Spain—Christian, Jewish, and Muslim—and beyond. Students may be asked to discuss themes such as love, death, power, betrayal, religion, exile, migration, nationalism, and warfare along with the literary and artistic representation of national heroes and anti-heroes, kings, queens, rogues, mystics, knights, saints, and witches.
