The Spanish Civil War: Film, Art, Literature
This course considers and studies the visual art, music, film, poetry, and literature of the Spanish Civil War, 1936-1939. As a precursor to, and a live testing ground for, the Second World War, the Spanish Civil War provides background and an introduction to the massive ideological fissures occurring at the beginning half of the 20th century that still influence societies today. The course will look specifically at films [including documentaries], influential art, photography, and various literary pieces for their ability to communicate trauma, pain, violence, and political fervor. We will consider the affective consequences of the various mediums to incite, invigorate, dis/inform, vlify, sway, and justify.
Course Format Description
Online course with synchronous small group discussions at least twice a week (subject to change as needed). Asynchronous activities will be small group discussions, film screenings, one-on-one consultations, etc.
