Topics in Mathematics: The Math of Ethnomathematics

Ethnomathematics is the study of mathematical ideas that arise in cultures outside of the traditional Greek and Western traditions. This can include geometric patterns and designs, mathematical games and puzzles, alternative approaches to solving algebraic and geometric problems, and related concepts. This course surveys places where these ideas arise, and the context of those mathematical concepts, but focuses on the mathematics embedded in those ideas. Prerequisite: Math 115, Math 175 (completed or in progress).
