Topics in Mathematics: Number Theory

This course will focus on the mathematics of integers: Factorization of integers, Euclidean algorithm, Fermat’s and Euler’s theorems, applications to cryptology. We will learn to use arithmetic functions: the divisor function, Euler’s totient function, the Mobius function and inversion, quadratic residues and reciprocity, representations of integers as sums of squares, Pell’s equation, and continued fractions.
