Literature in Context--Banshees, Changelings, and Everyday Heroes: Modern Irish Literature

This course will examine how modern and contemporary Irish writers employ and transform myth, legend, and folklore into literature that examines and represents issues such as colonialism, nationalism, poverty and wealth, faith, sexuality, and the relationship between artists and their community. We will read authors such Oscar Wilde, William Butler Yeats, Lady Gregory, James Joyce, Anne Enright, Seamus Heaney, Mary Lavin, Conor McPherson, Emma Donoghue, and Colm Toibin.
