Topic Course Title

Last Great Picture Show

Topic Course Description

In the late 1960s to mid 1970s, the old Hollywood studio system gave way to a new generation of American directors who helped create a more independent cinema that gave America a different voice in the world and a different vision of itself. The protests against the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights movement, and feminism saw the emergence of an entirely new political culture, reflected in movies that were soon recognized as audacious, creative, and off- beat. In this class we will explore this cinema via the ground-breaking fiction films and documentaries by such directors as Robert Altman, Hal Ashby, Peter Bogdanovich, John Cassavetes, Barbara Loden, Terrence Malick, Sydney Pollack, Bob Rafaelson, George Romero, Martin Scorsese, Peter Davis, Barbara Kopple, David and Albert Maysles and Charlotte Zwerin, D. A. Pennebaker, and Michael Wadleigh.
