History of U.S. and Cuba

Topic Course Description

The United States and Cuba restored diplomatic relations in July 2015 after 54 years. What is the history of that Cold War dispute? This course examines U.S.-Cuban relations from the late 19th century to the present, including the 1898 Spanish American War, the Republican period (1902-1959), causes and development of the Cuban Revolution, the Special Period in Cuba, restored relations in the Obama era, and a reversal since 2016. Students will conduct individual research projects; topics include the history of Guantanamo Bay, the Bay of Pigs invasion, U.S. Immigration and Refugee Policy, the Cuban Missile Crisis, Race and Revolution, and Soviet-Cuban Relations.
