Research Interests
She has published in The Journal of Popular Fiction, Hispania, Romance Notes, and Chasqui on Spanish Gothic fiction, mothers and mental health, and women in literature.

She creates opportunities for students to understand and appreciate Latinx/Hispanic cultures through literary, cultural, and historical readings and film. She also makes it a point of getting students to engage with Spanish-speaking members of the greater Beloit community.
Nimble and adaptable to changes in the college curriculum and students’ needs, Sylvia has taught a wide variety of courses, including courses on health in Spanish-speaking communities and Spanish for heritage speakers.
Sylvia is Harry C. Moore Professor of Modern Languages and Literatures and is currently serving as Director of Student Retention (2019-2021).
