Valerie Blair holds a B.M.Ed and a M.M. in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from Northern Illinois University, where she studied piano with William Koehler and Don Walker, and accompanying with William Goldenberg. She recently began teaching piano at Beloit College and The Music Academy of Rockford. As well as teaching piano, she is active as a collaborative pianist in Northern Illinois. She currently plays for choirs at Rockford University and Rock Valley College, as well as for ArtSong Project at the Mendelssohn Performing Arts Center. In the past she played in voice studios, for graduate and post-graduate recitals, and for opera and musical theater productions in Buffalo, NY, Chicago and suburbs, at Northern Illinois University, as well as at Rockford University.Other interests include a fascination with how children learn music, and the pipe organ. She is the Director of Music Together of Rockford, where she teaches early childhood music classes for children ages birth to five. Seven years ago she began learning to play the organ and assumed the organist position in November of 2013 at Second Congregational/First Presbyterian Church, in downtown Rockford. She holds the Service Playing Certificate with the American Guild of Organists, and will be completing the Colleague Exam in May of 2019.
