Yvonne Wu guides musicians and collaborative artists across disciplines to experiment, structure their creative processes, and realize ambitious projects. She teaches composition/songwriting and music theory and has supported students working across many genres, including indie, rock, prog rock, hip hop, game music, gospel, and classical. As director/founder of the InterArts Ensemble at Beloit, she brings together musicians, visual artists, videographers, writers, and dancers to collaborate on original performances and installations.
In her own music compositions, Yvonne investigates poetic and physical qualities of instrumental sounds, juxtaposing sonic characters through unconventional musical forms. Recent projects have also incorporated American Sign Language, poetry, dance, art installation, and video. She has received commissions from the La Jolla Symphony, Arraymusic (Toronto), the Wisconsin Music Teachers Association, and Figmentum (San Diego), among others. Her music has been performed by MIVOS string quartet (NYC), a.pe.ri.od.ic (Chicago), Black Sheep Contemporary Ensemble (Boston), the University of Washington Percussion Ensemble, and Ensemble SurPlus (Germany) and featured in the WasteLAnd concert series (Los Angeles), the University of Tennessee Contemporary Music Festival, New Music on the Bayou (Louisiana), SoundSCAPE Festival (Italy), and Aspen Music Festival. Dreams of a Young Piano, for solo piano with chamber ensemble, was awarded the 2018 Judith Lang Zaimont Prize (International Alliance for Women in Music). Her string quartet Utterance, released on Carrier Records, won the 5th Mivos/Kanter String Quartet Composition Prize.Edit my profile
