Research Interests

My current research examines the construction of narratives about democracy and citizenship through analyses of the undercurrents of race, gender, and sexuality discourses in the language of political economy. Under that rubric, I am currently working on two larger projects: one entitled “Value Claims: From Aristotle to Black Lives Matter” and the other, “Drowning in Desire: Reflections on Toxic Masculinity.” I’m also working on a series of articles on Anna Julia Cooper.

I also have a wide array of research and teaching interests and experience in political theory and beyond, including: theories of citizenship, representation, agency, and identity; democratic theory; American political thought and social movements in historical perspective; classical political economy and critical theory; race, gender, and sexuality; and radical pedagogy.
