Elizabeth (Betsy) Brewer firmly believes in the power of study abroad to help students expand their intellectual, emotional, and personal capacities. Her work is informed by her own experiences living abroad as well as in different locations across the U.S. and by a three-year mid-career stint serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in Slovakia.
Her publications include book chapters on partnerships in international higher education and comprehensive internationalization. She has also edited three volumes published by Stylus Press: Education Abroad and the Undergraduate Experience (2019), Assessing Study Abroad: Theory, Tools, and Practice (2016), and Integrating Study Abroad into the Curriculum (2010), contributing chapters to each. On September 22, 2019, the Chronicle of Higher Education included Education Abroad and the Undergraduate Experience in a list of ten new books on higher education, noting that it “Offers ideas on how to integrate study abroad into students’ overall learning experience, including how to teach students to develop respectful, not neocolonial, attitudes toward their host countries.”
