Beloit College Midwest Regional Admissions Manager Carin Smith says it’s a privilege to help young adults move forward in their education and life.

Carin Smith Carin SmithEnergetic, passionate, and caring in her guidance of students seeking higher education, Beloit College’s Carin Smith’81 has received a prestigious regional award for being a top-notch admissions counselor.

The Patricia A. Kasowski Recognition Award from the Illinois Association for College Admission Counseling (IACAC) honors a long and meritorious service to the profession, service to the association, leadership, and a career of distinction.

During Smith’s long and successful career, colleagues have been impressed by her insight, support, honesty, and confidentiality.

“Carin Smith is a household name – not just among those of us in this profession, but also among the countless families she has supported and served over the years throughout her career,” says former IACAC president and colleague Annie Kremer. “Carin is so incredibly deserving of this award and I am thrilled IACAC honored her and her contributions at this year’s conference.”

Smith has crisscrossed Illinois and neighboring states talking with prospective students since she became Beloit College’s Midwest Regional Admissions Manager in May 2020. With a prestigious lifetime career in college recruitment, Smith was the regional director of admissions at Lawrence University and a regional rep manager at DePaul University before returning to her alma mater. She says it’s a privilege to help young adults move forward in their education and life.

“Every prospective student has their own story, a unique and individual puzzle from the college admissions counselor’s side of things, and I have the privilege of helping them put their puzzle together,” Smith says. “Selecting a college is a long and personal adventure of introspection and research, a big move from the familiar to the brand new. Being the sole entity that gets to ‘move’ with a student from the familiar to the new is both humbling and exhilarating.”

The Beloit College psychology graduate’s greatest joy is guiding students to find their place as a Beloiter.

“Carin is an invaluable resource to our office and the wider campus community. She generously shares her wealth of knowledge and is a fierce advocate for students, especially those who may not have a supporter familiar with the college selection process,” says Director of Admissions Martha Stolze.

The Beloit College grad is a longtime IACAC supporter and worked collaboratively to elevate the college admission profession, most recently chairing the inaugural Women In Admissions Special Interest Group and reinventing the IACAC Speakers Bureau

Thanking her mentors and colleagues, Smith was delighted to receive the award at the IACAC Conference in May.

“I am thrilled to accept this award on behalf of all the regional admissions representatives doing the amazing and hard work we do every day, my Beloit College on-campus colleagues who put up with me and make me a better professional and person every day, and on behalf of my family, whose support of my efforts and craziness had never wavered,” Smith says.
