Logan Museum Receives NAGPRA Repatriation Grant

The Logan Museum of Anthropology is one of six museums and Indian Tribes to receive a FY 2022 NAGPRA Repatriation Grant.

Repatriation Grants are awarded to defray costs associated with the packing, transportation, and reburial of NAGPRA-related cultural items. The Logan’s award funds the return and reburial of five Native American ancestors and their funerary belongings removed from San Nicolas Island in Ventura County, CA in the late 1880s. Six tribal representatives will travel from California to Beloit to pack and transport their ancestors back to California for eventual reburial. Representatives will also view the Logan’s extensive collection of ethnographic and archaeological items from California during their visit. This repatriation is the result of two years of consultation with Tribes in southern California and brings Beloit College one step closer to return of all Native American ancestors stewarded by the Logan Museum.
