Marking the miles
During his junior year, Ben Jensen’21 had an incredibly unique experience: a project through Beloit College with an impact on the larger community of Beloit’s development. He led a report commissioned by the Greater Beloit Economic Development Committee, which measured economic trends and business opportunities within a 10-mile radius of Beloit’s city center.
At the time, Ben was working for Beloit’s student-run market research firm, Belmark Associates. He says he was sought out to join the firm by department of economics faculty member Laura Grube, although he’d never taken a class with her.
“She took an interest in me and my work,” says Ben.
Ben worked on the report for two semesters, first as a student collecting data and then as the team lead. He led four other Belmark students in creating the report that included demographic information, retail opportunities, and comparisons with other cities.
“It was really cool for me that it was a real client that was doing real work to solve a problem for the city of Beloit,” says Ben. “It wasn’t your typical school project.”
Ben considers the experience a jumping-off point for his career. After graduating in May 2021, he’ll pursue a master’s degree in science and business analytics at Arizona State University.
