Exploring the deep blue

“Those instincts kicked in, and I was just like, ‘No, don’t bite my boat!’” Joee Patterson’03 told PRI’s The World about the day that an elephant seal approached her inflatable boat. Joee was one of four marine technicians on the Nathaniel B. Palmer research vessel during an expedition to Thwaites Glacier in Antartica this past winter. Scientists are concerned that the fast-melting glacier could trigger 11 feet of sea level rise. Joee’s expedition marked the beginning of a five-year, international research collaboration.
