What’s in a name? Marijuana Vandyck earns Ph.D
Congratulations to Marijuana Vandyck, director of the Student Excellence and Leadership program, for completing her Ph.D in higher education leadership this May at Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee. Marijuana caused a bit of a media frenzy when she revealed in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that her dissertation was on black names in white classrooms: teacher behaviors and student perceptions. The story about how she persevered with her own unique name, which eventually inspired her academic work, went viral online, with Marijuana being featured in interviews on CNN, BBC, and NPR, and many other outlets picking up her story.
