Liz Theoharis, director of the Kairos Center for Rights, Religions and Social Justice at Union Seminary, will serve as the 2019 Duffy Community Partnerships Colloquium keynote speaker.

Her lecture will focus on connecting the dots between issues of oppression through a moral framework in order to empower those at the margins. In 2018, she and Rev. William Barber launched the current version of the Poor People’s Campaign: a National Call for Moral Revival, inspired by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The Campaign uses tools of grassroots, non-violent organizing to reveal the evils of systemic racism, poverty, ecological devastation, and the war economy and militarism, which are persistent, pervasive, and perpetuated by a distorted moral narrative that must be challenged.

In addition to the keynote, slated for Thursday, April 11 at 7:30 p.m. in Richardson Auditorium, the campus will present other talks co-hosted by Theoharis to coincide with the keynote. A discussion on “Arts & Culture in the Movement” will be held at 3 p.m. in the Bunge Theater, followed by a 4 p.m. talk on “Building Movements” in Mathers Lounge.
