Beloit is pleased to announce that Nicholas Borbely’19 and Laura Savage’18 have received Fulbright U.S. Student Program awards for the 2019-2020 academic year from the U.S. Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.

Nicholas and Laura are among over 1,900 U.S. citizens who will study, conduct research, and teach abroad for the 2019-2020 academic year through the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. Recipients of Fulbright awards are selected on the basis of academic and professional achievement as well as their record of service and leadership potential in their respective fields.

Nicholas has received the Icelandic Ministry of Culture and Education Grant for the Study of Icelandic as a Second Language, and will be attending the Árni Magnússon Institute for Icelandic Studies in Reykjavík. Nicholas began studying Icelandic in his summers while enrolled at Beloit, including participation in a summer course in Reykjavik, which was funded entirely by the Dr. Alan J. Stutz’59 and Martha Raup Stutz’59 Student Grant Fund. Laura has received an English Teaching Assistantship Award to Malaysia. Since graduating from Beloit, Laura has earned a Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults and is currently teaching English to schoolchildren in Mexico.

Katherine Spicer’19 was selected as an alternate recipient of the award.
