Alumni Advice: Working to Save Water
Job: Water Efficiency Assistant at the Portland Water Bureau
Major: Environmental Studies Major
Typical job responsibilities: Installing devices to collect data on customer water use, creating water use histories with customer data, working at community events to give out water-saving devices, and writing blog posts on ways to save water.
Typical challenges of the work: City jobs like this are competitive due to how stable and flexible they are. Many of the people that I work with have been with the city for 10 to 20 years.
Education level: Bachelor’s degree.
Advice for current Beloit College students: Sustainability is a new field, so there isn’t a standard path to follow. Explore anything and everything that interests you. It may end up leading you to a cool, sustainability-related job.
