Alumni Advice: Arthur Siller’05
Job: Plant and Soil Science Doctoral Student Department of Plant, Soil, and Insect Sciences, University of Massachusetts -Amherst
Major: Geology Major
Typical job responsibilities: Managing agricultural research, teaching undergraduate students, and writing research and extension reports.
Typical challenges of the work: Weather conditions, grant funding.
Education level for doctoral programs: Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree
Advice for current Beloit College students: Jobs in agriculture are very seasonal and there is a lot of turnover. Many jobs start in March or April so it can be hard to find a job right after graduating in May unless you have something lined up ahead of time. Look for jobs the winter before graduating. There are lots of good job boards from professional networks like the Midwest Organic and Sustainable Education Service (MOSES).
