Tourism Promotion in the Beloit Area

Salma Ali ’21 practiced her liberal arts education in her summer internship at Visit Beloit

This summer, instead of going back to her hometown in Bangladesh, Salma Ali ’21, an Economics and Mathematics double major, had a chance to work as an intern at Visit Beloit, an organization that brings local, regional, and international visitors to the Beloit area for a rich and satisfying leisure travel experience.

As a marketing and content development intern, Salma mainly engaged in two types of marketing - online or web-based and face-to-face. This experience has polished her interpersonal skills since it required interns to communicate with people of all ages, work in a team, focus on details, and multi-task when they worked on a number of projects simultaneously. On the job, Salma was also able to learn more about Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and the components to build a good website.

What helped her prepare for this internship was the liberal arts education at Beloit College. “My liberal arts studies at Beloit have made me a better writer and a more productive team-player. I have also learned to step out of my comfort zone, and communicate with diverse individuals. All of this has proved very useful in content development, collaborating with my co-workers, and communicating with people, for example.”
