“Native American Heritage Month celebrations” letter to the Beloit community

Dear Friends,

Beloit College is located on the ancestral territory of Indigenous peoples. We respectfully acknowledge the Potawatomi, Peoria, Miami, Meskwaki, and Ho-Chunk people who have stewarded this land. For our community, Native American Heritage Month provides an opportunity to celebrate more fully Native peoples and honor their influence on our nation.

As we continue celebrating Native heritage, we congratulate our faculty, staff, and students at the Logan Museum for receiving a Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) grant earlier this year. The Logan Museum is now working with NAGPRA to accelerate consultations and repatriation, a key objective in the museum’s 2021-2025 strategic plan. Repatriation is equity work in action.

Additionally, they are also prioritizing collaboration with Indigenous communities to acquire contemporary cultural items and are laying the groundwork necessary to develop a Visiting Indigenous Curatorship in the Logan Museum.

Be sure to also check out some of these resources.

Sincerely,
Scott Bierman
