Library Support Academic Year 2020-21
The library supports teaching at a distance and is available to support faculty teaching at a distance during this coming academic year.
Hours
The Library is open for Beloit College students, faculty and staff. Due to the crisis, we have adjusted our hours, but expanded our distance chat service. Up-to-date information on our hours can be found here.
Library Services
Instruction:
For the 2020-2021 academic year, library instruction is online. To schedule a session, please complete the instruction request form. We are also able to pre-record customized videos for specific courses. Please reach out to your liaison librarian if you are interested.
Research Guides:
The library has created over 50 research guides for courses, disciplines, and Channels. Please feel free to link to these resources in your Moodle page or on your syllabus. One useful resource is our Library 101 Guide, which has information that helps introduce students to the library and library research.
Databases:
Over the summer, we added access to over 100 library databases, adding full text access to academic journal articles, primary resources, streaming video, news articles, and reference materials. Some examples of our new databases include Academic Video Online, ProQuest One Academic, Early English Books Online, and Issues and Controversies. You can access all of these databases and more through our A-Z Database List.
The library has expanded its electronic reference collection with Credo. We now have access to over 3 million full text entries as well as thousands of images, audio files, and videos. It also contains the Mind Map tool which helps students understand how their research connects with other topics. Here’s a quick tutorial on how to run a basic search.
Research assistance is just a click away! Our chat box is available on many library pages including the catalog, research guides, and some databases. You can also search our Knowledgebase for answers to commonly asked questions. As always, you can submit an email to Libref@beloit.edu.
Course Reserves:
Course reserves are still available this semester. Our default is to purchase ebooks with multiple seats to ensure equitable access to these resources. Here is a link to the course reserves catalog. (Please note we are in the process of updating this for the Fall).
If an item isn’t available as an ebook, a physical copy will be available. If your course only needs a few chapters we can scan and make them available online. Please fill out this form to request scanning.
Over the past year, we have created a library of tutorial videos that cover topics such as identifying scholarly articles, using the library catalog, and creating an internet archive account. These videos can be used as course content.
We’ve recently started a series of Library Lifehacks videos which are short introductions to different resources like course reserves and Google advanced search.
Distance Learning Resources: If you’re interested in integrating new technology into your course, but aren’t sure where to start, check out LITS’ Distance Learning Resources page. We’ve compiled resources for technologies that will help boost student engagement and learning this fall. Examples include Timeline JS, Perusall, and video recording software.
