Practitioners of the liberal arts synthesize knowledge and experience, are able to transfer it to new settings, and through reflection and self-assessment, build on prior experiences to ethically and thoughtfully confront new challenges and take full advantage of new opportunities.

The Liberal Arts in Practice Center serves as a clearinghouse of opportunities to practice the liberal arts by providing information about available options and who to talk to in order to pursue those options. The Center is also designed to be a catalyst for advancing a liberal arts in practice approach to learning. The Liberal Arts in Practice Center is staffed by professionals who can give good advice about how to locate, structure, and leverage liberal arts in practice experiences. Center staff will be more than happy to consult with you about how to get the most out of your Beloit College education.

The LAP Developmental Model illustrates the developmental trajectory we aim for our students to move through during their time at Beloit. By participating in one or multiple entry points during your first year, you develop the agency to take charge of your college experience. With thoughtful planning, you can in engage in educational experiences inside and outside the classroom that connect and build on each other. Reflection allows you to deepen your learning in various contexts. This ultimately allows you to transfer your learning across subjects and situations. At the heart of all of this is a focus on the strong advising relationship between students and faculty.


The Developmental Model

A summary of the model:

  1. Students bring their identities, skills, assets, and life experiences to Beloit. We recognize that these identities, skills, assets, and experiences become the building blocks of their future experiences.
  2. While at Beloit, with the help of faculty, staff, and peer advisors, students take agency over their experiences and follow this trajectory and cycle:
    • Exploring interests and assets to identify potential opportunities for further experience. This exploration includes engaging in the curriculum and co-curricular activities available to students, as well as introductory beyond the classroom experiences like volunteering.
    • Experimenting by engaging in opportunities to try new things and develop further interest. Students test their new interests through required courses, job shadowing, and accessing summer experiences like research and internships.
    • Cultivating deeper understanding through more in-depth experiences. One major area for cultivation is the Liberal Arts in Practice Requirement, a credited beyond the classroom experience that all students engage in, often during their junior year.
    • Connecting value and meaning across multiple experiences and interests. Students connect through capstone courses, engaging in thesis projects, and beginning to plan for postgraduate work.
    • Transferring knowledge and experiences to new experiences or to others as an advisor. After Beloit, young alumni transfer their learning to new environments, from professional employment to graduate study or service.
  3. Students leave Beloit with ideal outcomes of high achievement, personal responsibility, and having made public contributions to a diverse society.
