Network


Connecting to the Network

Beloit College Information Technology provides high-speed wired and wireless network access in campus buildings, some campus affiliated spaces, and in residential and academic spaces for use by faculty, staff, students, and guests. 

The BCNet wireless network is for use by faculty, staff and current students.  The BCGuest wireless network is available for campus guests.  Wired network ports are available in most buildings and can be easily identified by the color-coded orange or blue connection port and the Dxxx label.  White wall ports are for landline phone connections and have a Vxxx label.

Note: Private wireless routers are not permitted on campus. Please review our Private Wireless Router Policy for more information.


Device Registration

Devices that will be connected to the campus wired network must be registered once per academic year. Any device that only connects wirelessly does not need to be registered.  If your device does not have a web browser, it will need to be registered manually.  Instructions for registering your devices is available on the IT Confluence wiki.


Passwords

Beloit College IT system passwords serve several purposes, such as preventing unauthorized access to sensitive information and helping faculty, staff, and students prove their identity to campus computer systems.  IT uses a central password directory to authenticate sign-on to most of our systems. Use your Beloit College password to access: The Portal, campus computers, BCNet wireless network, G Suite/Google Apps (Gmail, Calendar, Drive), Belcat (Library catalog), Jenzabar EX, Moodle and Moodle Groups, Studio Abroad, network file shares, campus directories, and more.

The Information Technology (IT) department will never ask you to give us your password.  If you get an email asking to verify your account or provide your password, it is likely a phishing scam - do not respond to it or click on the link contained in the email. If you ever have any questions about the authenticity of such a request, please contact IT Support before responding.

Beloit College no longer requires users to change their password on a regular basis, unless you have access to sensitive data in Jenzabar EX.  For more information on passwords at Beloit College, including information on guidelines and best practices, enrolling in Password Manager, changing your password, resetting a forgotten password, and more, please visit our IT Confluence wiki.


      Email Distribution Lists

      Several email distribution lists are available for use by the Beloit College community. These are designed for emails directed to all faculty, staff or students, or all of those constituencies. Emails posted to these lists should be limited to college-related topics; participation in the lists is automatic.

      Want to create your own email distribution list? Consider creating a Google Group.  Google Groups allows you to create online and email-based groups.


      Phishing

      Phishing is the criminally fraudulent process of attempting to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details, by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication (email, text message, etc.).  Examples of phishing messages include: requests for banking or credit card information, requests for updates to PayPal or eBay account information, or requests for email account username and/or password.
