Executive Director, Beloit College Activity & Recreation Center

Reporting to the Dean of Students in the Division of Student Life, the Executive Director of the Beloit College Activity & Recreation Center (The Powerhouse) provides strategic, dynamic, and creative leadership in the construction, program development, and ongoing management of this trailblazing project. As a critical cog in the College’s economic future, The Powerhouse will create an environment where community is encouraged and celebrated; student wellness, athletic, and engagement programming intersect in synergistic ways; and adaptive reuse and eco-friendly design make it a groundbreaking model for sustainable practices. Until its opening, the Executive Director will engage and consult campus stakeholders and advise senior leaders on design decisions that advance the project vision, as well as collaborate with students, faculty, staff, and community partners to develop the College’s comprehensive student engagement, athletic, and recreation program. Following its opening, the Executive Director will cultivate and grow the program, serve as the senior administrator, manage staff and resources, engage students in professional and leadership opportunities, and innovatively utilize The Powerhouse to meet the needs of Beloit’s diverse and ever-changing student body.

Seeking to distinguish itself from other facilities of its kind, The Powerhouse will repurpose a decommissioned power station on the nearby Rock River into Beloit College’s cutting-edge, 115,000 square foot student center that integrates key elements of a student union, recreation center, and athletics facility into one transformative community space. This $38 million, sustainably designed project will bring the Beloit community together in an historic setting that boldly embraces the future. Incorporated into The Powerhouse are collaborative meeting/seminar spaces, informal gathering and hang-out spots, an indoor running/walking track, a competitive pool, a cafe, student organization space, a fieldhouse with an artificial turf floor, special events space, fitness space, outdoor decks over the Rock River, and a public riverwalk. Opening in the fall of 2019, The Powerhouse will be the centerpiece of student life and community engagement on the Beloit campus. For more information on the project, visit www.beloit.edu/powerhouse/.

Minimum qualifications include a bachelor’s degree, with a master’s degree in student affairs, recreation, health promotion, or business preferred, as well as seven to ten years of progressively responsible experience developing reputation and mission enhancing programs and/or facilities (e.g., student engagement, student union/center, recreation programming, etc.). Proven leadership, interpersonal, innovation, and communication skills are highly desired. Additionally, successful candidates will possess experience developing and supervising professional staff; the ability to effectively manage multiple competing priorities and coordinate complex administrative operations; familiarity with current trends and best practices in higher education; a demonstrated commitment to the ideals and principles of equity, inclusion, and social justice; strong human relations skills; and effective management, motivation, conflict resolution, and problem-solving skills.
