Simple and Effective: Directing Your IRA Distribution to Support Your Passion

Institutional pride runs deep for Ben Galloway'62 and his wife, Jean. So, it was a natural choice for the Aurora, Colo., couple to decide to direct their IRA distribution to Beloit College to support adventure, creativity, and exploration for students today. And the best part is that it benefits both Beloit and the Galloways.

The American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 extends provisions for qualified charitable distributions from IRAs through Dec. 31, 2013, thereby continuing this simple and effective way to support your philanthropic interests. When asked why they chose to give in this way, Ben says, "It was just so easily done—so easy to direct a gift to an institution [Beloit] that we care very much about. It just simplifies giving."

The Galloways chose to direct a charitable IRA distribution to scholarships through the Beloiter Scholarship Initiative. This fund enhances the financial aid students receive from the college, enabling them to try new things, discover, and make the most of their Beloit experience. The Galloways' gift has made it possible for Beloiters to create a journey, just as Ben and his father before him, Wendell C. Galloway'33, did at Beloit.

Ben attributes much of his success in life and his career to his experiences at Beloit. An athlete and scholar, playing basketball and football while double-majoring in history and biology, not to mention serving as president of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and being involved in student government, the Turtle Mound Society, and Omicron Delta Kappa. His time both in and out of the classroom at Beloit prepared him for the complexities that he faces each day as a forensic pathologist.

Over the years, the Galloways have made Beloit a priority in their lives through service and philanthropy. Ben is a member of the Alumni Board of Directors and has served on his reunion committee, and both Ben and Jean have supported a variety of initiatives at Beloit. They are passionate about Beloit, and their IRA gift is a simple yet powerful way to ensure Beloit's breadth and richness of experiences continue to thrive for future generations.
