Geology and the Liberal Arts in Practice

Promoting the Liberal Arts in Practice has traditionally been part of the Beloit Geology culture and is a philosophy that guides how we facilitate learning for all students, from geology majors to non-STEM majors.

LAP Requirement

All Beloit College students also complete a Liberal Arts in Practice (LAP) requirement, usually during the junior year, that totals the equivalent of at least 1 unit of academic credit: applied or original work extending beyond the traditional classroom, such as (1) a LAP-designated credit, (2) a course with a paired LAP experience, or (3) a LAP synthesis project with a public presentation, exhibit, publication, or performance (from the Beloit College Registrar, http://www.beloit.edu/registrar/lap/ )

Geology students may complete the LAP requirement through courses, research, internships, or other activities that relate to geology.  Alternatively, they may complete the LAP experience through other activities such as serving as a resident assistant or teaching assistant, engaging in leadership activities on- or off- campus, or other activities that connect theory to practice.  Three options are available for completing the LAP requirement:

  1. “All inclusive” LAP-designated courses or credit-bearing experience, including some study abroad programs and credit-bearing internships (LAP-1)
  2. A LAP experience followed by successful completion of LAP-2 designated course (LAP-2)
  3. LAP syntheses that combine a LAP experience with reflection and a public presentation (LAP-3)

Some options in Geology

Field Geology (GEOL215)

All geology majors complete a field methods course (Field Geology, GEOL215).  Students make field observations and measurements. they synthesize geologic data using maps, cross-sections, and written and oral reports. Many geology and environmental geology majors will complete their LAP requirement through Field Geology (LAP-1).
